Cracked Wheat Berries with Coconut Milk and Mixed Fruit is packed full of healthy ingredients and is a delicious twist on a classic breakfast, steel cut oats.
If you guys are anything like me, steel cut oats is your go-to healthy, but filling breakfast. But, after a while, it can get kind of boring (what can I say? I like a bit of variation in my breakfast routine). So I’ve decided to add a new staple into your breakfast roundup, cracked wheat berries!
What are Cracked Wheat Berries?
In case you’ve never heard of cracked wheat, it’s a wonderful source of nutrition (it’s a completely whole grain that helps with heart health ) and when paired with fresh fruit, coconut milk, and a touch of honey for sweetness you’re looking at a superfood with staying power! And it is seriously the perfect way to help power you through a busy work week (especially since you can make it in a crock pot overnight!).
Cracked wheat berries, or dalia or daliya, are whole grains that refer to the “entire edible part of wheat kernels: the germ, the bran and the endosperm”, according to Bob’s Red Mill.
Cracked wheat berries have a nutty and slightly earthy flavor, can be red or white in color and labeled winter or spring for the season they are grown. They are made by grinding wheat berries into smaller pieces but larger than flour and loaded with essential minerals and vitamins like antioxidants, Thiamin, Niacin, B Vitamins, Zinc, Folate, Vitamin E and more.
Although, often confused with bulgur, the two are not the same and cannot be used interchangeably in recipes. Mainly because bulgur is parcooked (precooked), dried and is ground into various sizes where cracked wheat is uncooked and milled.
So make a big batch of cracked wheat tonight, and simply heat it up during the week! Add whatever fruit you like (even add a touch of cinnamon, if you’re feeling adventurous) and hopefully we can all make it through to the weekend 🙂
