Serves: 20 individual doughnuts
What You'll Need
  • I. Dough
  • 2.5 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup milk (I used almond)
  • 6 TBS. melted butter
  • II. Orange Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 TBS. juice from an orange
  • The zest from 1 orange
  1. In a medium sized bowl, add the sugar, butter and milk (both kinds) and whisk together. In a small bowl, add the salt, baking powder and flour. Whisk together until well combined. Now, slowly incorporate the dry mixture into the wet, gently folding the ingredients together (you don't want to over mix this dough). Once barely combined set aside.
  2. In a large frying pan, add the canola oil and allow to heat over a medium-high temperature. For those using a thermometer, heat to around 350. For those without a thermometer (like, myself) simply flick a bit of water onto the oil. If it sizzles and looks a bit scary, it's ready.
  3. Take about ½ TBS of dough and roll into a ball then place in the frying pan. This shouldn't take more than a minute or so per doughnut hole. (TIP: make sure to have a plate with a paper towel laid out for the freshly fried doughnuts)
  4. Once you have cooked all of your dough, simply mix the glaze ingredients together and eat!
